Environmental Protection

During the reporting period 74.9 thousand tonnes of production and consumption waste were processed and disposed of on the territory of OMG’s deposits. This included the processing of 8,100 tonnes with OMG’s own resources using thermocracking, and 60,000 tonnes using humate composite additive, while 2,800 tonnes of waste were transferred to subcontracting organisations for disposal. In addition, 4,000 tonnes of radioactively contaminated pipes and equipment were cleaned on the territory of OMG.
In order to prevent pollution of the Caspian Sea the Company uses stepped steel structures with a special filling material that reinforce the coastline against landslides. These are known as ‘Reno mattresses’. At the Teren-Uzek and Zapadnaya Prorva deposits of NGDU Zhylyoymunaigas some 8.6 km of protective dam is being reinforced. As part of the industrial environmental control programme, the quality of sea water and seabed deposits are monitored annually at seven control points; the condition of sea wells is studied monthly; and samples are taken quarterly and certificate of inspection are issued.

The Company annually allocates significant funds to mitigate the impact of production factors on the environment, and over KZT 17.2 billion was spent for that purpose over the last three years.

The Company monitors the air, underground/soil water, soil and radiation annually engaging both internal environmental laboratory and independent specialized organizations which have properly equipped facilities and necessary permits/licenses.

Flood-prone and flooded wells are monitored to assess the impact on Caspian Sea ecosystem.

The Company annually performs works to eliminate sources of radioactive contamination by gathering radioactive equipment (tubing, scrap with various diameters, etc.) from field sites for storage at temporary radioactive waste storage yard.

The Company has been studying new technology and running pilot tests to decontaminate tubing and equipment.

It is commonly known that downhole equipment is repaired near a well area resulting in contamination of soil near wells. Apart from other measures taken to prevent contamination near wells, wellhead areas are being built with sewers at fields.

 

The Company makes consistent efforts to treat, recultivate and restore contaminated lands for the elimination of historical contamination. The latest methods and technology are being studied, while acquisition of an environmentally safe and efficient waste treatment unit and implementation of new technology on recultivation and restoration of oil contaminated lands are both in progress.
